Detailed Discussion

Steamy and sultry – no, not the description of a paperback romance novel – it’s the weather, featuring one of the hottest days in 20 to 30 years. Burlington set a new record of 99 degrees, and St. Johnsbury’s record of 97 was the hottest since 1998. Plattsburgh topped the list at 101, tying the all-time maximum there. And this morning, it already feels warm and sticky to start the day. Heat Advisories and Extreme Heat Warnings continue today, as most places experience heat indices – or popularly known as “feels-like” temperatures – in the upper 90s and 100s. Regardless of your health, your body will struggle to keep cool, and our friends and neighbors with health concerns may deal with more serious affects. The Advisories and Warnings mean we should reduce or postpone more strenuous outdoor activities, drink adequate fluids, and seek out cooler locations, whether that’s indoor air-conditioning or outdoor shade and water, especially during the hottest part of the day from afternoon through early evening. This weather sauna remains centered to our south, where an impressive pile of heated air sits beneath high pressure, extending from its center in South Carolina north to southern Quebec, west to the Great Lakes, and south to the Gulf of Mexico. Our morning charts also show low pressure in northern Quebec, from which a cold front reaches southwest through the Great Lakes, north of Detroit and Chicago, the stalling through Nebraska. As this storm tracks east into Labrador by late today, the cold front in the Great Lakes slows down, while the heat concentrates ahead of it, compounding our already torrid conditions. It means another afternoon in the 90s, though as the front approaches, we’re expecting developing afternoon clouds through northern and western locations, eventually becoming some localized showers and thunderstorms, mainly through northern areas. Although the storms will be hit-or-miss, and storms could contain strong winds and heavy rain. The front finally makes its way to our south tonight into Wednesday, still a rather warm overnight tonight, but humidity and heat will take a step back on Wednesday, with readings from 80 to 90 north to south, and a few localized afternoon showers south. The front appears to stall through the mid-Atlantic states later this week, allowing the cooler air to re-establish itself, but also leading to a chance of showers Thursday and Friday, especially for areas through the Adirondacks and from Rt. 2 south. Temperatures will be mostly in the 70s.
